The New Readers for New Life of Illinois will host their 9th new reader
conference June 7, 8 and 9 at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
Dr. Terry Davis from LSU Medical School will bring a team to make a
video for the AMA to help doctors become more aware of literacy problems
that some of their patients may have. A few of the adult learners will
be asked to take part in the video. It will be a first for adult
learners-- partnering with people from the medical field to help find
ways to bring understanding about people with poor literacy skills. The
doctors and the team members will be the students at this conference and
the adult learners will be the teachers. This has never happened before.
There will be a general session about health-literacy. Ruth Parker, MD
and Mark Williams, MD from Emery Medical School will answer questions
and explain to the adult learners how they can be better informed
patients before visiting a medical office. Other team members will be a
part of this session. I have attended six of Illinois New Readers
Conferences and have worn many different hats at them. At this
conference I will be a member of Dr. Davis team.
