Colleagues,
I guess I better add something more on assessment. A teacher can use
standardized tests to operationalize the principles that Reid Lyon mentioned,
OR they can figure out how to translate the principles into informal
assessments that a teacher constructs. These can also be valid and reliable.
I understand the push for standardized tests that fit all situations;
theoretically they may go against the grain of teachers who look at reading
and writing as ways for the learner to construct meaning, rather than as ways
to learn skills. "Constructing meaning" and "skills-based instruction" are
fighting words to some, and I think it is important not to scoot rapidly over
a theoretical abyss that has consequences for practice.
