To NLA List, I am back from Charleston, SC, and the COABE conference was 
attended by more than 1100 other adult educators. It was a great exchange of 
ideas,. programs, and professionalism...The field is doing some pretty 
wonderful things for adult learners . I did attend the roundtable on racism, 
poverty and literacy...in fact, I attended two different sessions..both were 
disappointing because only one point of view was accepted as valid. I did not 
boycott any event because  local NAACP members asked us not to. They told me 
that
SC needs tourism and those I spoke with said they really gain nothing from 
others coming into their state and telling them what their problems are. . 
The conference provided many opportunities for dialog, but workshops that 
could have provided this were cancelled as some kind of protest. Adult 
educators are providing so many opportunities for those who are affected by 
social and educational barriers. I am proud of our organization . I am sure 
there are other opinions to be heard. I enjoyed being in Charleston and was 
impressed by the wonderful reception the people gave the conference 
participants.
