Celebrating 35 Years of the Adult Education & Literacy System (AELS)
of the United States of America
Tom Sticht
Earlier I announced a speaking tour of six cities in the U. S.
celebrating the 35 years of the growth of the AELS from FY 1967 to FY
2002. I am now one third through the tour with talks in New York (April
12) and San Francisco (April 30, May 1). Altogether, over three
hundred adults have heard about the AELS as Ive made the case for
considering it the third branch of public education in the U.S.
Following my talk at the Literacy Assistance Center in New York on April
12th, Ira Yankwitt, Director of Adult Literacy Services sent me a great
email saying, "On behalf of everyone here at the LAC, I just want to
thank you again for the thought-provoking and inspiring presentation the
other day. Your talk got rave reviews, and everyone I spoke to felt
that it was a rare opportunity to connect research to practice."
Im really heartened that so many people are anxious to learn more about
the AELS and the results of research that has provided important lessons
for adult literacy education practice and advocacy. Now its on to four
more cities by the end of October. Following is a list of dates, places
and contacts for those interested in attending any of the remaining four
presentations.

would like to get together they can contact me at tsticht at aznet.net and
we can see if some time can be arranged for a meeting.
