NLA Colleagues,
Today's Thursday Notes brings the field lots of good news. I am
especially glad to see that the new Director of the U.S. Department of
Education's Division of Adult Education and Literacy is the experienced
and nationally recognized state adult education director from
Pennsylvania, Cheryl Keenan. This is a very positive signal to our field.
I hope as many people as possible will present public comments on
reauthorization of the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA)
at the June 3rd and 4th hearings. (See the message below for details)
In comments to the NLA list, and recently also informally to me, a few
people have suggested that AEFLA should be pulled out of the Workforce
Investment Act (WIA), and should (again) be a separate act. Some have
said that, among other benefits, this might increase the workforce
related activities reported in adult literacy education, that since
AEFLA has been under WIA ironically there have been disincentives to
track and report work-related outcomes.
I would like to invite those who hold views on how WIA should be changed
to post them to the NLA List for discussion.
