Keenan to 
Lead DAEL

Former Pennsylvania State Director Cheryl L. Keenan will be the new director
of the Division of Adult Education and Literacy (DAEL), Assistant Secretary
Carol D'Amico announced yesterday. Keenan has played a pivotal role in
shaping and implementing the new requirements in Title II of the Workforce
Investment Act of 1998 and is expected to provide a wealth of experience,
insight, and vision to the division and OVAE as reauthorization activities
are conducted relative to the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.
Officials say that she is anticipated to arrive at her new post in early

OVAE to Hold
Public Meetings on
Reauthorization

Assistant Secretary Carol D'Amico announced this week that OVAE will hold
two meetings in June to hear public comments on reauthorization of the Adult
Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA). The first meeting is scheduled
for June 3 in Farmington Hills, Michigan and the second slated for June 4 in
St. Louis, Missouri. See attachment for sites. For details on how to present

being planned for the summer 2002 in California and North Carolina at times,
dates, and locations, to be determined. Stay tuned.

States, OVAE
Convene in
Charleston

Nearly one hundred State Directors of adult education and state staff are
meeting with OVAE officials in Charleston, South Carolina this week. Meeting
participants are working through accountability and assessment issues,
learning more about reading instruction for adults and talking about
reauthorization of AEFLA. Workshops topics include data matching, test
reliability/validity, new ways to measure educational gain and new
monitoring procedures. Also covered are ideas for expanding program delivery
and access as well as for the next Report to Congress.
