David and all

Can anyone anywhere tell us how this initiative does not duplicate,
and more appalling, still, take funding away from existing adult
education efforts?

I know there's been some discussion already on this list, and hope
that folks will respond to the action agenda sent separately, as well
as suggest ways to really hold this LFF thing and the people who
purport to run it accountable to us. How *will* adult literacy be
served by its implementation?

>>Dear Colleagues,
>>
>>We would like to take this opportunity to let you know about one of
>>several adult education efforts currently taking place at the
>>federal level. This effort focuses on building research-based
>>community partnerships that positively impact learner outcomes.
>>While the working title of the new effort is "Learning For the
>>Future (LFF)", in coming weeks we will identify a permanent name
>>that provides more clarity and avoids any confusion with the
>>long-standing Equipped for the Future initiative.
>>
>>We share the goal of improving the quality of adult education
>>services and the availability of these services. Collaboration
>>among service delivery systems is an important strategy to
>>achieving this goal.
>>
>>Thus, this new initiative develops out of a need to more thoroughly
>>explore successful collaborations within the large network of
>>systems involved in adult education including community- and
>>faith-based organizations, libraries, businesses, and local
>>providers. The leadership of the Office of Vocational and Adult
>>Education (OVAE) and the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) are
>>working together to ensure that all the good work that is ongoing
>>in the field informs this research and development effort. The LFF
>>initiative will complement but not replace existing programs and
>>initiatives, such as LINCS, Equipped for the Future (EFF), and
>>other adult education efforts.
>>
>>Through the systematic study of community partnerships and
>>collaborations, LFF seeks to further inform the adult education
>>field on how best to leverage resources, establish effective
>>working partnerships in the community, and to enhance
>>capacity-building efforts. We plan to share more information about
>>the LFF initiative in the coming months and encourage you to visit
>>the OVAE web site periodically for updated information. OVAE and
>>NIFL also plan to solicit feedback from all constituencies that are
>>involved with adult learners. We look forward to and welcome your
>>involvement.
>>
>>Sincerely,
>>
