In Quigley's book "Rethinking Literacy" he speaks of stereotypes which attempt to narrowly definite illiterate people. One of the stereotypes he mentions is the "Simple African American". It seems like the story you presented in your posting might be viewed as typical of this stereotype. I have been a silent observor on this listserv for about a year and I know from your previous posts that your depth of understanding with regard to literacy is far reaching. I wonder however what you think of Quigley's research and how these stereotypes relate to literacy funding? e.b.s.
