You may not have been referring to me. However, just in case, I wasn't  
trying to trash teachers. They are inocent victims, even though some are 
incredibly ignorant, and choose to remain so.  What I was trashing is the 
system that has been designed to work for one population, (white, male, 
straight, heterosexist, middle class America) at the exclusion of everyone 
else. It is a system that continues to promote racism, sexism, class 
disparties, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. 

It preserves this by ignoring the presence of these problems in the shaping 
of our lives, and by sending teachers to environments plagued by these with 
absolutely no preparation to address this. Some teachers have great teaching 
instincts. Others don't. Regardless, if teachers have not background of these 
issues and how to address them in classromms, they are bound to fail. They 
may, or may not fail in preparing students to pass a standardized test. 
However, they fail by continue to promote hatred of difference through 
ignorance. This applies to ABE too, as exemplified by the "casual student" .
