Art La Chance: "I come from a rehabilitation counseling background..."

I think it would be interesting to broaden the discussion of teacher
certification to ask what training and/or experiences, formal or informal,
has had the greatest impact on the effectiveness of the literacy leaders on
this list? Accepting Andres' passionate rejection of traditional teacher
education for the sake of discussion, I've been reflecting on what HAS made
me the effective adult educator that I am. It definitely was not the
courses I took to become certified for high school history and social
studies, except for those that introduced me to research design. On the
other hand, the courses on reading and reading remediation (even though the
content was in regard to children) and special education have been very
helpful, and so have the courses in adult androgogy and "the school in
society". But I think other training, most of it (on-the-job and
in-service) in counseling skills have actually transferred even more to
classroom approaches.
