Colleagues,

In my lunch break I have been reading FOB, August 2001. I checked
"generalizability" for the articles.

Hager--application of theory to practice in ABE
Cunningham Florez--using student comments to improve practice
Shaywitz/Shaywitz--the neurobiology of dyslexia
Geertz--use of slingerland derived method in teaching adults
Cuban--women reading for pleasure
Murr--the use of theory/practice, practice theory in an ABE classroom
Alamprese--ABE teachers

As you can see, the articles are written to generalize to 3 different groups:
 1) all teachers of dyslexic students; 2) ABE teachers; 3) ABE teachers
working with women. Hager and Murr use reading theory. Florez uses
student opinions. Shaywitz/Shaywitz use brain scans. Alamprese uses
interviews, observations and reading theory. Cuban uses
interviews/anecdotes. Geertz uses the slingerland.

Yup, these categories are quick and dirty, some will disagree, but they show
what is possible.

I did this fast, but of 7 articles 5 are reflections on direct experience. I
think they're terrific. The authors are right out front and could be
contacted easily for more information. I am using their insights in my own
work.

Andrea
