Colleagues,

For bibliography buffs and fellow researchers, it's Clifford Geertz, not 
Christopher Geertz.  Besides other works, he has written "The Interpretation 
of Cultures," (1973) and "Local Knowledge" (1983).  Unless he has passed 
away, which I don't think is the case, he is at the Institute for Advanced 
Study, Princeton.  The first chapter of "...Interpretation...," is "Thick 
Description:  Toward an Interpretive Theory of Culture."  Chapter 15 is 
entitled,  "Deep Play:  Notes on the Balinese Cockfight."  For anyone 
interested in this line of work, it's a honey.
