I haven't been following this discussion but I seem to be hearing that there
is some money targeted for child work and that would divert the focus of NIFL
away from working with adult issues. If I read this correctly, I see
compromise that would respond to the president's initiatives, the demands to
focus on actual research, and the need of adult learners. The president has
pushed the idea that "no child will be left behind". there have also been
calls to focus on serious, real, scientific research. as far as I know about
research, there is research that shows a correspondence between the education
of the parent to that of the child. In other words, the higher the education
of the parent, the higher the education of the child. There is no evidence
that testing kids every year will guarantee an increase in the graduation
rates of children. There is also no evidence that vouchers will guarantee an
increase in graduation rates of children. However, we have evidence that
education of parents corresponds to education of children. So let us focus on
the single piece of evidence that we have. in order not to leave any child
behind, we must educate their parents. In this sense, any money that is for
children's education can be invested in adult education provided that we can
get the parents to get GEDs. associate degrees, college degrees, etc. An
investment in adult literacy is an investment in children's literacy, while
the opposite si not true. If anyone is truly sincere to leave no child
behind, lets educate the parents since, the "scientific evidence" tell us so.
