Let me add a ps to former post on research/child/adult.

Chapter 2 of NCSALL's "Adult Learning and Literacy,"  vol. 1, is essentially 
a conversation with Catherine E. Snow and John Strucker.  Catherine is a 
primo researcher on child literacy, John works for NCSALL and is doing a 
study on adult learning.  Title:  "Lessons from 'Preventing Reading 
Difficulties in Young Children for Adult Learning and Literacy.'"
