Jon,
I have invited both Senator Feinstein of California and our
congressional representative to our Even Start project. I have also
invited our State Assemblyperson to our project.
So far, only field representatives have visited. The Assemblyperson's
field representative and the Congresswoman's field representative. Both
of these people commented over and over how educational the visit was
and how much they learned from the visit. They responded positively and
enthusiastically to our work and I feel confident that they will share
their perceptions with the legislators.
We assume that our legislators understand our projects, but visiting in
person and talking with participants is so much more powerful than
simply reading about them. That's why it is *imperative* that we get
them out to visit in person.
Senator Feinstein's rep is coming later this month. I will continue to
invite my legislators to visit personally, as well as continue the
dialogue I have established with their field reps.
I have found that it pays to be persistent.

Nancy Hansen has -- and now she enjoys the ability to talk with Senator Daschle's staff about literacy. David has done the same with Senator Kennedy's office. They've established a dialogue. They're building poltiical capital. George Demetrion has done so too when we've mobilized for something. How about everyone else?
