You know, Jon -- I am ready anyTIME for a challenge and I see my name in
here a bit later.
I'd LOVE to put a bug in the Senator's staff-ear about celebrating literacy
on a proclaimation basis. But WHY "There's one in JULY TOO???" baffles me!!
I'm sitting here shaking my head! For us a July commemoration is NOT what
*I* would support, though!! Just as kids aren't in school as Chris Smith
wrote, our program has learners working in construction jobs at this time of
year and have little time for this sort of thing.
Also, it sounds like President Bush, who is married to the Mother of
Literacy, WANTED to celebrate now in July - for whatEVER reason - so if we
go for a Presidential Proclamation of International Literacy Day in Sept.,
will it be a political foo-faa? Put words in my mouth - what do I say about
the switch?
I could easily call Daschle's office, but I'll be looking for him to go
after the House-Senate Resolution for September 8th when my Council AND
state "celebrates adult learners". His "favorite learner-gone-public" could
even "do the ask" alongside me. Our Marketing Committee has an event in
place for the Saturday preceding that special day - at Barnes & Noble yet.
Hmm-mmm, a nat'l connection perhaps? (Theme of ours TBA before the end of
this month.)
Thoughts?

> I am unable to find a House-Senate Resolution for National Literacy Day
since the year 2000. Further, I haven't been able to find a Presidential
Proclamation from our current President. Anyone else found one?

> This commemorative is merely symbolic, but it does force our federal
policy-makers to acknowledge the importance of adult literacy, even if only
in passing. Have we become complacent and let our visibility erode?

> This might be a good time for a reality check ... When was the last time
YOU contacted the offices of your two Senators and Congressperson -- about
anything literacy-related?

> This isn't a rhetorical question. I know Nancy Hansen speaks with folks in
Sen. Daschle's office fairly often. Let's take a moment to do an inventory
here. If you would, post to the list (a) who you last spoke with (which
office -- and name of the staffer, if you can), (b) when it was, (c) what
was the topic, and (d) what feedback you received.
