Dear NLA List, Jay and Andres:
I guess, Jay, those of us "in the field" hoeing the row by hand, while the
better-funded K-12 programs "farm the next field" using high-tech
cultivators and expensive weed-killer, see the writing on the wall. Adult
Literacy is *already* abandoned when it comes to being overlooked regarding
the multiple funding needs their programs have.

So if the grassroots *public school* administrators can do it, why *won't*
"this adminstration" (GW and crew) do it to us all as well?

Andres, that's a really big assumption you made. I think there's a lot of
people in high positions who don't bother to "get educated" NOR "enhance
adult education" when they get piece-meal the message they *do* receive
through minimal research.

Thoughts anyone?

Jay:

You are right, nobody has said that NIFL is going to stop focusing on adult
literacy. However, the paranioa is well founded. We are already an
underfunded field. To add to this, the president nominates people w/
virtually no knowledge or expereince in adult literacy to the NIFL board. It
is in the best interest of adult educators to, at least, worry about this,
and articulate possible strategies to be better represented.

We can also assume that GW and his nominees will get as educated as possible
about adult literacy and they will support and enhance adult education w/o
any pressure from us. However, I think that several colleagues are rightly
worried about the prospects of adult literacy in light of the recent
nominations.

All, I may have missed something but why is it assumed that NIFL will not be
dealing with Adult Education/Literacy? Is it because of the recent
announcement of Nominees? Or has some official statement about the current
mission of NIFL? What have i missed?
