Bush Nominates NIFL Board

 On Jan. 14, President Bush announced his intention to nominate the
following 10 people to serve on the advisory board of the National
Institute for Literacy (NIFL):

 Carmel Borders of Kentucky, Douglas Carnine of Oregon, Blanca Enriquez
of Texas, Carol Gambill of Tennessee, William Hiller of Ohio, Phyllis
Hunter of Texas, Robin Morris of Georgia, Juan Olivarez of Michigan
(president of Grand Rapids Community College), Jean Osborn of Illinois,
and Mark Yudof of Minnesota (president of the University of Minnesota).

 (At press time, the White House had not provided any further
information on the nominees. Look for a complete story in our next
issue.)

 If confirmed by the Senate, these nominees will replace the current
board members — Clinton appointees whose terms have expired. The board
sets policy for the NIFL. The new board will recommend a permanent
replacement for Acting NIFL Director Sandra Baxter. Contact: Sandra
