I know Phyllis Hunter. She was the Reading Manager for Dr. Paige at
Houston Independent School District. This was primarily an elementary
school support program. The then governor involved her in Read for Texas,
the state's response to the Reading Excellence Act. Almost all her
experience is with children's literacy.
However, when Dr.Paige was a Houston READ Commission board member, he
regularly sent Phyllis in his place to attend meetings and events of our
urban literacy coalition. With the commission, her experience with adult
literacy included regularly supporting adult learners at GED graduation.
The most significant adult literacy activity was related to the Reading
Excellence Act and the requirement that school districts partner with
community-based literacy providers to engage in family literacy activities.
This resulted in a network of family literacy programs in Houston area
elementary schools - and for this we commend her.
Margaret
