NLA Community --

On the media campaign and multiplier effects of adult education -- What
about a campaign whose message is "educating adults is the fastest way to
improve our U.S. communities"?

I'd like to see a campaign whose goal is public awareness of adult education
opportunities. A positive campaign. I'd like the focus NOT to be on adults
enrolled in education programs as unfortunate "others", setting apart adults
enrolled in AELS classes from the "rest of us" who don't need basic
education. Instead, create a campaign that focuses on the locally emerging
diverse US community, that emphasizes the community's responsibility (OUR
responsibility) to provide educational opportunities to our community
members, and that providing these educational opportunities to adults helps
the entire community advance and improve.

For example, build on the strong interest in and emotional impact of family
literacy by showing how educating a single parent impacts that child's life
immediately, increasing the child's opportunities as well as the parent's
opportunities. Show how the adult parent becomes a contributor to the
community through working (as a firefighter perhaps), voting (no butterfly
ballots), participating as a community leader (to increase school safety),
etc. in addition to being a strong family leader.

End with a tagline like, "Brought to you by the US Adult Education and
Literacy System, educating over 4 million adults annually through local
schools, community colleges...."

A not-yet-fully-defined idea, but thought I'd share and see if it resonates.

David,

Thanks for taking this up. I guess I am thinking of "critical literacy" as
it applies to myself and in this case, funders, policy makers. I have never

read in the popular press, or even the unpopular press, of the multiplier
effects of adult literacy. This information is available I know at the
policy levels at which Tom Sticht works (Tom, don't retire!), but for the
rest of us it takes digging and library research and interviews. Maybe my
as
yet unread book by Amartya Sen discusses it, but where else? This is what I

mean by lack of analysis, even the best newspeople simply don't put 2 and 2
together. Last night I listened to a radio interview of Jared Diamond
("Guns, Germs and Steel") and he lead the interviewer to the conclusion that

"philanthropy is the best defense." Well, YES! Meaning that if we don't
actively help people get out of poverty we will all go down together.

I haven't yet heard an interview with Andrew Natsios, the head of USAID. If

we can't do it for ourselves, can we do it for other countries? There is a
big problem with leadership, here, and it is linked to a GULF in information

about WHAT WORKS.
