NLA R & D colleagues: Here are a couple of contacts I made last year
that might prove fruitful for AELS researchers with interests in
science, technology and policy. Since I am now retired, I won't be
pursuing either of these leads. But others might find them helpful.

Last November I exchanged some messages with Dr. Marshall "Mike" Smith,
Program Officer for Education at the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation about work that the foundation might do in adult literacy
education. He responded that he was interested in two aspects of
adult education, how technology might help and how to carry out adult
education for ELL (ESL) adults, particularly younger adults. He was also
interested in policy issues and efforts that generate solid knowledge.
The foundation is not interested in funding operating costs of programs
or curriculum development without some research aspects to it in the
above areas. His email address is

M.SMITH at HEWLETT.ORG

and the snail mail address is

Later I exchanged messages with Dr. Norman Fortenberry of the National
Science Foundation about the need for R & D in the Adult Education and
Literacy System (AELS) of the United States. He indicated that adult
science and technology education is an area of potential interest to
the foundation. He said they would welcome a very brief outline of
(1-2 pages) of thoughts on how the foundation might contribute to this
area through the AELS. Most usefully, thoughts would extend to the
broad spectrum of possible activities in which the Foundation might
engage to advance adult science and technology education in the AELS,
including research and development, pilot implementation, dissemination
of success models, and fostering wide-scale implementation. Ideas
should be framed within the context of NSF's existing programmatic
portfolio (the web site for NSF is www.nsf.gov and Dr. Fortenberry's
Divsion is under Education, Human Resources Development). His email
address is
