After reading the discussions here on how we might encourage and
enlighten the media into joining the fight for a more literate society I
was very pleased to hear two direct references to "literacy" this
morning while listening to the radio on the way to work this morning.
The station is in Chattanooga and the first involved a commercial for a
soap product where the narrator set the stage by telling about the
background of a particular family, and the main point of their
background was that they had set up a "literacy program for children in
the community".
The second was a joke: "You're a redneck if you think that 'reading'
should not be a part of the high-school graduation test".
Both of these occured within the same half hour, so it seems like the
need has been realized.
