There may not be a home depot for adult learners, but there is a TV show and
web site that takes a how-to or self improvement approach to reading and
writing for pre-GED adult learners. I am referring to TV411. The show
features popular celebrities and sports figures, authors and adult learners
who share strategies for using literacy and numeracy in real life contexts.
Check out the web site at tv411.org for broadcast times near you. The Adult
Literacy Media Alliance, or ALMA, creators of TV411, have liscensing
agreements with adult ed departments in North and South Carolina and
Massachusetts. If you work in a program in one of those states, you should
contact your state ed office for details on how you can get the show in video
along with print materials and teacher's guide. If you are interested in
learning more about TV411, call Nancy Rademacher at ALMA at 212-807-4244.
