Many communities in the southwest do not have libraries at all, much less
libraries with computers and Internet. Communities are many miles apart,
library systems are minimally funded, and even the larger cities with a
library have little public transportation.
Of course, if one looks at the maps showing where the federal dollars for
technology went, it was not to the smaller, isolated communities along the
US-Mexico border. What would we do for farmworkers and day laborers if they
learned how to use computers, went to college, and didn't want to be
farmworkers or laborers any more? A head of lettuce might cost us $5!
