[NLA] Meeting Adult Literacy Needs: Reality vs Rhetoric

Andrea:

Many people in many sociological, psychological,
educational and philosophical camps have writings
on the relationship of freedom and governing socio-
political orders, including myself. Amarta Sen is
a well known philosopher. He has obviously had the
same insights, with different conceptual apparatus,
as people like W.E.B Dubois, Jack Mezirow, Paulo
Freire, and many many more who understand the
politics of unfreedom.

Sen might agree that it would be naive for teachers
to project our own well-meaning politics about adult
education and the wonders of democracy onto those
who are filled with the Enronion spirit. To some who
feel the threat of political awareness, democratic and
civilizing political moves are often labelled "Marxist"
"Leftist," or even the old "Communist" when they are
in fact only aimed at the development of fair and just
democratic capitalism.
