You raise an interesting thought-instead of talking about k-12 and adult education, should we really be promoting K-Adult? 
On the one hand, I see K-Adult keeping our issues/needs in the minds of people as they talk about education. On the other hand, it might dilute our issues. What do others think? By the way, in GA, I am hearing more and more talk about 
P-16 (prek-through 4 years college).

George, The answer to your first question is YES, but with this caution. We 
(coalition members) are not opposing these nominees. We are questioning why 
an adult Ed/literacy person has not been included. And does this list 
(focusing on k-12 "experts") signal a change of focus away from Adult 
Ed/Literacy? Does this help? 
P.S. Every President since George (not you) has appointed his "own" people. 
It is goes without saying that we want to work with them. And we do see the 
strong connection between k-12 (which probably ought to be referred to as 
K-Adult) and adult education in the context of lifelong learning. JC
