To the list:
When I gave Miriam the URLs for some of the updated materials on NCLE's Activities for African-American History Month pages yesterday, I inadvertently copied a URL twice. The correct URL for the "Powerful Voices" Web site about Charles Moore's Civil Rights era photography is http://www.civilrightsphotos.com/Pages/index2.html
Thanks

Subject: [NLA] February and Civics and NCLE's Web site
February is African-American History Month, President's Day is a holiday, and Valentine's Day is a bonanza for merchants and could serve perhaps as a springboard for discussing the material culture of the United States. These events make February a particularly rich month for integrating civics into English language learning adult classes.
NCLE's EL/Civics Activities For Adults http://www.cal.org/ncle/civics/ offer examples and advice for integrating civics into English language instruction at all levels of proficiency.
Of particular interest this month:
The Activities for African-American History Month http://www.cal.org/ncle/civics/AAmon.htm has recently been updated to include more Internet activities for high intermediate and advanced level learners including links to the recent National Public Radio's recent multi-faceted report on James Weldon Johnson's song, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/feb/liftvoice/020204.lift.html
and Charles Moore's "Powerful Days" which highlights his photographs of the Civil Rights era http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/feb/liftvoice/020204.lift.html.
Have a look and download activities to use in your classroom. Write to us ncle at cal.org and let us know what you think of the materials and resources in our collection. Miriam
