I appreciate Gial's posts to the list and her points are well taken.  
However, adult literacy does not operate in a political vacuum, and the 
Nation article makes many important points and connections.  As we age (as an 
over 50 boomer I feel I can say this!), we see that individuals are neither 
all good or all bad.  McGraw may indeed be deeply devoted to literacy and at 
the same time the points the Nation article makes about publishers and 
profits from tests can be true.  I think and hope that the listserve is open 
to all points of view that literacy advocates and practitioners deem 
relevant.  The Nation article was not "peddled" by the Nation, but by 
practitioners who find it important. It was, for example, given out at a meet 
your new state director meeting organized by the Literacy Assistance Center 
in NY.  DD
