Dear All:
In case there is any misunderstanding about The Nation article, I posted it
because it is a current discussion in the national press about literacy
policy. I did not realize that there would be an advertising message
automatically heading up the story, so for that I apologize. Next time I will
cut and paste rather than use the email function of the publication.
If we want there to be a national discussion of literacy policy, we have to
listen to what we agree with and what we do not. Then we can respond or not,
but *we must be engaged in the public dialogue*. It has not been easy for me
to respond to some of the things I have heard or read, like the Forbes
article from a year ago, but it is very healthy for us to participate in the
national discussion--or others will have that discussion without us!
So, Gail, please put your experiences into writing and send them to the
editors of the publication, along with fact corrections, so that we are part
of the dialogue. Otherwise the dialogue goes on without us--isn't that the
real problem?
