Dear All:
In case there is any misunderstanding about The Nation article, I posted it 
because it is a current discussion in the national press about literacy 
policy. I did not realize that there would be an advertising message 
automatically heading up the story, so for that I apologize. Next time I will 
cut and paste rather than use the email function of the publication.

If we want there to be a national discussion of literacy policy, we have to 
listen to what we agree with and what we do not. Then we can respond or not, 
but *we must be engaged in the public dialogue*. It has not been easy for me 
to respond to some of the things I have heard or read, like the Forbes 
article from a year ago, but it is very healthy for us to participate in the 
national discussion--or others will have that discussion without us!

So, Gail, please put your experiences into writing and send them to the 
editors of the publication, along with fact corrections, so that we are part 
of the dialogue. Otherwise the dialogue goes on without us--isn't that the 
real problem?
