Colleagues
As many of us are fully aware, it's not just the Bushites that have a
limited view of adult literacy. A little over a week ago I caught a
brief snipit of Laura Bush's eloquent presentation to Senator Kennedy's
committee on education. The emphasis on childhood reading was stressed
over and over again not only by Mrs. Bush, but also by the liberal
Democratic Senators. Tom Harkins from Iowa pointed to the importance of
childhood reading so that we won't have to "mend, repair, or fix the
problem" later on. I'm working from memory. If that's not the exact
quote, it's very close. Thus, even our friends on the Hill are not
seeing things our way.
Senator Dodd, from CT is on Kennedy's committee. I contacted his office
last week and I think others from the Nutmeg State are also doing so.
Given Senator Harkins 'understanding of adult literacy, I think it would
be very important if some folks from the great state of Iowa contact him
even at this very late date for that meeting at the capital tomorrow.
