NLA Colleagues,
This is National Literacy Action Week (NLAW), an effort sponsored by the
Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education, SCALE.
On the SCALE Web Pages, [http://www.unc.edu/depts/scale/NLAW2002.html]
NLAW is described this way:
"Throughout SCALEs history, we have supported the activist initiatives
of campus-based literacy programs across the country. National Literacy
Action Week (NLAW) is our most prominent organizing initiative for
strengthening literacy activism. This year, NLAW is February 1-7, 2002,
chosen to commemorate the Civil Rights Movements first lunch counter
sit-in on February 1, 1960, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
NLAW is an orchestrated, nationwide event where campus programs
simultaneously join together to raise awareness about literacy and
create change on their campuses and in their communities."
Useful organizing tools, from the Web pages, for NLAW and other literacy
action efforts include:
"- ORGANIZING NLAW EVENTS
- GETTING MEDIA COVERAGE
Appendix 1: Defining Advocacy, Activism, and Awareness Raising
Appendix 2: Examples of Advocacy, Activism, and Awareness Raising
Activities
Appendix 3: Why College Students? What Impact Can We Really Have?
Appendix 4: Notes on Doing Activism
Appendix 5: Principles for a Long Campaign"
This is a good example of a national effort to raise awareness and
especially one which gets college students involved in adult literacy
efforts.
