Tom and the group,
Adult Basic Education teachers and literacy tutors in NM had intensive
professional development on two NCSALL topics this year and last: Learner
Persistence and Adult Multiple Intelligences, both of which were based on
models studied in NCSALL's professional development research. Teachers and
tutors in NM can point to ways that theses professional development
opportunities improved their practice.
Teachers' testimony at a statewide conference included such statements as:
a student could see for the first time that there were ways he was smart,
retention in another class improved, teachers felt creative and re-energized
about their practice...we have numerous other written and recorded comments
on these opportunities, all of which were highly positive.
We are pointing this out not so much to defend NCSALL, but you could say
that it's through professional development specifically that the research
makes a difference and New Mexico has been making efforts to connect
research and practice. And, obviously, these efforts are the key to
justifying any resources devoted to either research or practice
individually.
I agree with you that if NCSALL isn't publicizing successes such as these,
especially to policy makers, they certainly ought to be.
