Hi All,
 I think that trying to narrowly define literacy, either from a skills based 
framework or a sociocultural framework, inherently limits what we can do for 
our students. Basic skills are necessary for decoding purposes, which will 
hopefully lead our students to increased participation in their community, 
their children's education, and to critically interpret information from all 
sources. Research shows that the use of authentic literacy material and 
activities actually changes students literacy behavior outside the classroom, 
but they still need the basic skills necessary to engage in many literacy 
practices.
