George,

i think your list is a start and you are good to put it into the discussion.

Do any of these studies say what actually happens in the classroom? READING
IS CENTRAL. It's why we are all here!!! I think if we can't figure out the
best methods to use in teaching adults to read and write, we had best be in
another business. Methods have to be described, validated, measured, and
shown to be reliable!!! This should be the center of our discussion!!! Do
we have studies which test out methods? Do we have teachers, or
organizations who have done their own research?

>From the book by Victoria Purcell-Gates--her adult student, Jenny, had books
of drill pages, all neatly filled in, but Jenny still couldn't read! She
lived in a non-print world! Purcell-Gates worked with her, and started her
out by asking her to describe in writing a work day, which she did. Vicki
then typed it out, corrrecting the spelling, and Jenny said something to the
effect that " I never read my own words before." As a result of this method,
Jenny was able to GENERALIZE her reading ability to other contexts.

>From a case like this, a treatment/control group study could be designed.
