Fellow Adult Educators,
Regarding the recent posting germaine to the NAACP
tourism boycott of South Carolina.
The boycott began on January 1, 2000, so it has been
over two years since it was begun. (see CNN article:
http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/07/01/scflag.02/ )

Choosing to honor the NAACP boycott is not an
indictment of COABE, but a matter of conscience. As
adult educators issues of race, poverty, oppression
and social justice are at the very heart of what we
do, and have created the conditions within which our
work takes place. The NAACP boycott is an action in
direct response to those very same conditions. As
members of a field concerned with and working toward
social justice and equity honoring the NAACP boycott
seems consistent with our own beliefs and goals.
The work of COABE is meaningful and vital. Discussions
of race, poverty, oppression and social justice are
also vital and we should create as many forums as
possible for them to take place both in our work with
students and in terms of informing the field. It does
seem ironic that one of those discussions would take
place in a forum which requires participants to cross
the NAACP boycott line.
Sincerely,
Mariann Fedele
