[NLA] Re: COABE, race & social justice

Colleagues:  The list has been quiet on the concerns with addressing race, 
class and social justice issues at the COABE conference.  While COABE 
withdrew the plantation tour, and has offered to make space for a 'round 
table', nothing has been done to address the reality that the conference 
will ask thousands of adult educators to cross an NAACP picket line/boycott 
of tourism.

The small team now planning to attend from New England is moving ahead with 
plans for the 'round table' - primarily an exploration and exchange of 
resources and initiatives.  IN addition,  a group, including myself and 
Maryanne Corley (Povrace list) will speak with the COABE board.  Also, the 
new NAALPD group will address the issues at the pre-conference.

We are looking for any who are planning to attend, and wish to be part of 
the effort to have an action plan for the following:
1) spreading information about the boycott, and other social justice isseus 
in SC
2) adding to the collection of resources for adult educators to integrate 
issues of social justice, race and class into instruction
3) addressing policy issues within adult education organizations concerning 
support for social justice actions.

We have a scant 5-6 weeks to complete our planning.  Hope to hear soon.  All
