Susan,
How wonderful of you to speak up. I read "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" in 1975
for my master's degree. Freire has always stayed with me. I worked on the
NCSALL project with Sophie Degener (see chapter notes). What she has given
us is an absolute gift. It is non-polemical, meaning non-angry. She uses
simple words. She includes a chart, a continuum of practices. She shows how
it can be done. This is the ONLY non--angry piece I have ever read.
The Gillespie piece is even more extraordinary as it links liberatory
thinking (Brian Street, multiple literacies, all that) to the development of
voice. I have read a couple of other pieces on adult literacy writing, one
in "The Right to Literacy" about a Maine fishing village which was absolutely
charming and again right on target. Thanks for your contribution and your
appreciation of Freire.
Andrea
