Mr. Sticht - As I read through your posting this AM I had to smile. Your
resistance to change reminded me of some of my students who also often
feared change. Though your argument was more sophisticated, they also
failed to see the relevance of trying new things and for any change they
might want to create in their lives, some were pretty sure they already knew
how to do it.
I also found it comforting that you are not a physician. I fear that your
technique might be to amputate though I only have a hangnail; and use a
knife rather than a scalpel because you have empirical evidence that it
works and it was invented first.
The teachers I know and work with are likely to read the information you
reference, and think about it in terms of its relevance to their own
learning, for thankfully, they are learners also; and in terms of their
students' learning. If the information appears relevant seems to me that
teachers might then dig deeper. I've read the information you've referenced
and I don't recall it being directive or calling for me to implement without
further information. In your role you may have a need to know not only what
works, but also why or how it works. But in the classroom I am more
interested in the what and even the what if. What works today, may not
work tomorrow. What works with some learners won't work with others. The
teachers I know have a passion for learning and for helping others learn.
That they perpetually seek tools and knowledge seems cause for celebration
rather than ridicule. If your one size fits all approach to problem solving
worked, I'm pretty sure we would not be having this exchange.
