Im writing about concerns I have about adult literacy in our country
today. Because of the September 11 tragedies things are different in our
nation. Our country does not enjoy full employment anymore. Adult
literacy has always been important for the well being of our nation, but
it will become of greater importance with more people now becoming
unemployed. In 1985 when I was in an adult literacy program,
unemployment was even higher. There were lots more adults going back for
reading help at that time. In a year or two will the literacy field be
ready to take on more adult students?
We had a literacy summit over a year and a half ago and some good things
came out of that summit that could help us to be prepared. Are we at the
place we should be after the summit? If so, then we are ready to help
take on more literacy students. If not, then we should try to get to the
place we should be. Lets take a look and see where we are.
