[NLA] Progress on alternative assessments

NLA Colleagues,

We have heard from Gloria Gillette about Ohio's progress in using
portfolio assessment. Thanks, Gloria.

And we have learned from a recent E*Literacy NLA post
[http://lists.literacytent.org/pipermail/nla/2001/000097.html ] that the
National Academy of Sciences has put together a committee this year to
look at standards for adult education alternative assessment, also
"an important step in making it easier for states to use Equipped for
the Future (EFF) standards and still meet the reporting requirements of
the National Reporting System (NRS)." Perhaps we could hear from EFF
colleagues on the progress they are making in developing assessments to
measure EFF standards.

We haven't heard from the State of Washington yet. Last year at this
time Washington had a draft set of rubrics for measuring progress in
many areas. How are those going? Are they being piloted? Refined? Is
there a copy of these available online for others to look at?

Is there news from Arlington, Virginia's Education and Employment
program? What's happening with the writing assessment rubrics and anchor
essays? Are they being used at the program, throughout Virginia, in
other places?

What other states have been developing alternative/performance-based
(not paper and pencil test) assessments, and working toward making them
valid and reliable, to meet NRS standards, for programs in their state?

Who else is working on developing NRS-compliant alternative assessments?
