David mentioned an opinion poll that was undertaken by UMass in
support of MassINC's Awareness and Action Campaign, which is
following up on the New Skills for a New Economy report. I just came
back from a meeting in which one of the UMass team, Lou DiNatale,
presented the findings.

He said the data indicates that basic skills education has very
strong support among likely voters in MA and that most of these
voters believe that the state government has a responsibility to help
adults with limited reading, writing, math and English skills but
that government should partner with business to meet that
responsibility, and that not enough is now being done. Lou said that
the polling data is definitely strong enough to gain the attention of
politicians.

The data collection ended on 9/10 and so was unaffected by the 9/11
events. Some of the data tables have opinions from July 2001 and
September 2001 and some show an increase in support.
