NLA Discussion: Meeting the Needs of Out-of-school Youth

In my experience, 16-22 year olds come to ABE programs for different
reasons. Some are mandated by the court. However, others have learned
that they can drop out of an educational system that requires them to go
to school from 9-3 (or some variation of that) Monday -Friday, and in an
ABE program they can get away with going a few hours twice a week! In
their minds, getting a GED by going a few hours twice a week is better
than getting a high school diploma by going 5 days a week for 6 hours a
day. In fact, I know of an alternative high school that offers that as
one of the options for kids.

Mary Jayne,
Could you please give us some more information about these 16-22 year olds?
Technically they don't have to be in school, do they? Why do they come to
ABE classes? Are they mandated? Thanks for the information.
Andrea
