David,
Congratulations on the wonderful news about the supplemental budget for adult
basic education in Massachusetts, and thank you for the informative,
uplifting account of the processes that brought this into play. I am saving
this information for future reference, and will refer to the Web site for the
materials on government processes at the URL you provided:
http://www.sabes.org/budget.htm. I doubt there is one state in the nation
that isn't facing or undergoing severe budget cuts for adult literacy. I can
only speak as an individul at present, but yes, I am inspired, and anxious to
assist organizations within New York State, and New York City in particular,
with such advocacy campaigns. Students' direct voices to legislators *would*
logically make the difference--successful models from which to build
campaigning curricula for those of us who help them learn, provide the best
seed for grass-roots efforts everywhere.
