Re: George's suggestion that VALUE should take the lead in recommending a
nominee for the NIFL Advisory Board ...
There are at least two directions VALUE may want to go:
One way would be that the organization itself could recommend a high profile
person who experienced learning to read as an adult as Gail suggests.
One important consideration is that any such person being recommended is
capable of speaking knowledgeably about student involvement. It is not
enough that he or she at one time had personal experience as an adult
learner. In order to educate fellow board members and advise the Institute
from a adult learner perspective, the person being recommended either must
be familiar with adult learner leadership issues or at least have the time
and willingness to learn about such issues and advocate them. This may be a
tall order.
If VALUE decides there is no high-profile individual that has knowledge
and/or desire to advocate on behalf of all adult learners as a NIFL Advisory
Board member, another direction might be for VALUE to ask organizations like
the National Coalition for Literacy to recommend someone from within VALUE's
ranks. Such a recommendation would not seem self-serving if it came from
others.
Either way, the spirit of all the postings to date is the same. We should
look to VALUE's leadership on this issue.
Note: Although I provide pro bono consultation to VALUE, this posting is
just my opinion. I am not speaking on behalf of the organization.
