Subcommittee
Supports Importance
of Adult and Voc. Ed

Deputy Assistant Secretary Rob Muller received a warm welcome from the House
Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and
Education during his FY 2002 budget testimony April 26. Rep. Ralph Regula
(R-OH) is the new chair. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI) also new to the
Subcommittee, said he intends to be "a big supporter of adult education" and
noted the importance of family literacy as a "two-fer," producing results
for adults and children. Rep. Don Sherwood (R-PA) expressed strong support
for tech-prep funding. Rep. John E. Peterson (R-PA) indicated his interest
in adding funding for vocational education and to request help for schools
in paying for high technology equipment in classrooms. Members said they are
eager to meet with Assistant Secretary designate D'Amico as soon as is
appropriate. Contact jon.weintraub at ed.gov

Flooding Impacts
IA, MN Programs

Mississippi River flooding has closed Davenport's Career Assistance Center
serving 500-600 adult learners, reports State Director John Hartwig. Aware
of the potential for flooding, Eastern Iowa Community College District,
which operates the multicultural program, has made arrangements for students
to be served in other locations. The showcase Center may be closed for up to
three weeks. Meanwhile, recent Minnesota flooding along the Red River
bordering North and South Dakota has put many adult learners on sandbag
shifts and kept others from being able to get to their learning centers,
says State Director Barry Shaffer. The flooding of the confluence of the
Mississippi and Minnesota rivers also has had a smaller effect on metro
programs. This year's weather follows a devastating tornado in Minnesota in
the same area near the South Dakota border. Last year the tornado involved a
large number of adult learners in clean-up activities. Contact
