Nancy:
I rather favor asking applicants who cannot get seats to sign the postcards,
and not write a message unless they want to. And some will sign with an X.
My ex-husband, a smoker, used to get all these postcards sent to him from the
tobacco industry, with instructions to sign, add his address, and drop it in
the mail (postage paid of course). Direct mailings to Congress!
Recently, I have been working with a coalition of CBO's in the colonias
here, which are rural and semi-rural (okay, about 100,000 residents). The
barriers, not just transportation, but lack of public spaces, libraries,
telephones, etc., just to provide a program or class. And the distances in
West Texas mean a one hour trip to get to a meeting and another hour to
return--just within El Paso County. I may start packing a tent! So I am
getting some exposure to the problems that rural and smaller communities face
just in putting a program together.
