NLA Discussion: Implications of Legislators "Not Getting It."

A quick response to an important concern in Catherine King's message:

"...many of us don't know how to approach the situation in the political
realm."

It's been said before but is worth saying again: the very best information
I have come across for understanding how to effectively approach the
political realm is Sam Halperin's "Guide for the Powerless and Those Who
Don't Know Their Own Power," which you can order online at www.aypf.org.

Keep in mind that by "powerless" he is referring to anyone who is not
exercising their voice with their government. A new, updated version of the
guide came out recently that is succinct, timely, and, in my personal view,
should be required reading for anyone living in a democracy -- especially
those interested in advocacy.

But don't take it from me...according to a blurb on the back of the guide by
the founder of Common Cause, John Gardner, "The American system was built on
the basic assumption that citizens would be active in self-government. But
citizens are not active today, and our system is limping. Absolutely
essential to recovery is a massive wave of citizen involvement. But how can
the citizen be effectively involved? Samuel Halperin tells us, with clarity
and wisdom."
