Here are a few more numbers for the pot:

In my 1996 study of adult literacy services in public libraries, the pool of 
53,000 students (enrolled in 63 longstanding public library literacy 
programs) was 55% female.  

Other demographic characteristics were:  More than half (55%) were members of 
minority groups (32% Hispanic, 23% Black).  Some 36% were unemployed, 50% 
were employed either part-time or full-time.
