NLA Colleagues,
An NLA list subscriber recently mentioned state adult education
departments and how they see themselves. This caused another subscriber
to write that a visit to the list by someone up on the national scene of
adult education directors "might ground the talk of how the field
communicates with, relates to, sets priorities for, with or against, the
existing structure."
I am delighted that Dr. Lennox L. McLendon, Executive Director of the
National Adult Education Consortium has accepted my invitation to join us
as a guest on the NLA list during the week of May 7th. Below is a brief
bio so you can learn a little about him.
Between now and May 7th, please post questions for Lennox to the list. I
will compile these and send them to him before May 7th. You may also
continue to post questions during the week of May 7th.
For example, you may want to ask about the role of state adult education
directors in policy formation at the state or national level, the
relationship of state education departments to the US Department of
Education or Congress, or you may want to know about opportunities and
constraints as state ABE directors see the world of adult literacy/basic
education. For example, what powers and authority do state adult education
directors have, and which ones are federal prerogatives, and what
powers do practitioners have? I look forward to seeing your questions
for Lennox over the next three weeks.
==========================================================================
Lennox McLendon has over thirty years experience in adult education and
literacy. He began as a part-time teacher and over the years has taught
ABE, GED, Adult High School, and ESL. For six years he was a local adult
education program manager.
After his years at the local level, he spent a little over ten years with
the Virginia department of education as a regional consultant for 30 local
adult education and programs. The next twelve years he was state director
of adult education in Virginia.
His professional contributions during that time included Chair of the
National Coalition for Literacy, leadership roles with the national
council of state directors, and advisory roles with partners such as the
American Bar Association's Law and Literacy Initiative.
In his current role as the Executive Director of the National Adult
Education Consortium, he has two functions: First, to respond to the
adult education information needs of the Congress and White House staff
members. Secondly, to facilitate professional development activities for
the state directors of adult education and their staff members.
