I am pleased to announce that from Monday, April 16 to Friday April 27th,
we will be joined by a guest discussion facilitator. I will post this to
the group again, right before the 16th, but I wanted you to have a chance
to think about this.
Our facilitator's name is Hediana Utarti(pronounced: oo-tar-tea). Hediana
is originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, and she spent the last 12 years of
her adult life in Honolulu, HI. From 1992 -2000, she worked as the
Co-Director of the Women's Center at the U. of Hawaii at Manoa. The
Center is responsible for developing educational programs for women
students on campus, referral services, supporting student programs and
developing networking with community-based organizations. She has helped
to establish and expand: self defense classes for women, health
workshops, sexual assault prevention teams, relationship violence
prevention education and the Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transgender Student
Services office. Since 1998 she has also worked at the Family Peace
Center, a domestic violence agency in Honolulu as support group
facilitator. Presently (since June 2000) she is continuing her career in
domestic violence work through her work at the Asian Women's Shelter in
San Francisco where she serves as the Coordinator for Volunteer Program
and the Queer Asian Women's Services program.

Hediana would like to throw these questions out for possible discussion:
a. How do we support immigrant women in literacy that is
culturally-appropriate and sensitive?
b. What do we do when they reveal to us that they are in a violent
relationship? Do we have any idea what SAFETY means for them and for
instructors themselvs? c. What if the students' issues 'push our own
buttons'?d. How do we create and maintain a safe learning space for the
non-heterosexual populatin: gay, lesbian, or transgender or 'questioning'
folks (and questioning youth?) How do we deal with homophobia in the
classroom? Do we have a space for trasgender people?

I am very excited by Hediana's interest in joining us for discussion, and
I think that her questions can elicit fascinating "talk". She will be
available for discussion starting on April 16th.

Daphne
